Area Reports - Summer 2011

Austin

Since our last newsletter the Austin area has performed at a few events.

On July 26th we went to San Antonio with a bus load of LHAB members and some that met us down there for a very special event. The Texas Bandmaster’s Association honored Mr. D with the Bandmaster of the Year award. LHAB member, Don Haynes, is the current President of this organization and made this happen. Thanks to Don for doing this for Mr. D. Of course, we all know this is long overdue but congratulations to Mr. D!!!!! We had a great turnout, 59 members playing Texas Fight as he was introduced and the Eyes after his acceptance speech. It was a great event!!!

Once again on August 3rd we played for the Rise School Sports Banquet. This has become an annual event for us as well. The Rise School is strongly supported by Coach Brown, his wife, and staff.

We have also been asked to play for an event by MK Events and Inside Texas Magazine, a local UT Sports magazine, on October 6th. This is a TX-OU kick-off party/tailgate/pep rally on Thursday, October 6th at ROIAL on 5th St (http://www.roialaustin.com) from 7-11pm. We would be playing around 8:00pm. October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and they are raising funds to give back in support of the cause. They are working with a non-profit (www.healincomfort4achange.org) who directly works with breast cancer patients in making their post-surgery experience a little more comfortable.

Try to stay cool this hot summer and start making plans for Band Day, October 29th!!

Houston

The summer was quiet with no local events planned. However, there is going to be a new Houston area rep for the coming year. Tom Staton, tenor sax player and avid attendee at Houston area LHAB events, will be taking the reins from Andre Sylvester. You can get in touch with Tom by email at tomstaton1@hotmail.com for info about Houston area events this fall.
