From the President

Happy Spring, LHAB Members! The LHAB Officers and the area groups have been staying busy with many events this spring, as you will read in the articles in this quarter’s Blast. And, plans for Band Day 2010 are underway. We have already secured Band Day 2010 with UT Athletics - it is scheduled for October 23 vs. Iowa State. A Big XII Conference game - hooray!

2010 Scholarship Update

LHAB scholarships play an important part in the lives of LHB members. The scholarships that LHAB provides to LHB members assist these students in receiving an outstanding education at The University. It also allows them to continue to participate in the Longhorn Band.

It's Time for "The Music Man" with 76 Trombones and Clarinets!

The LHAB Officers voted to feature Trombones and Clarinets in the LHB Showcases (display cases) this year. The timing was perfect because the International Trombone and Clarinet Conference will be housed at UT beginning on July 7, and we need to update the showcases.

Job Descriptions of LHAB Officers

I’m going to ask you to think back to your days in the Longhorn Band- but not the exciting and fun-filled experiences like marching through the tunnel for the first time (every time!) or performing at historical events, etc. No, I want you to remember how much planning went into each and every activity of the Longhorn Band. Whether we were preparing for a halftime show, a concert, a KKY/TBS event, dealing with our own time-management, or any of the many things we did as a LHB member, we were all developing skills that prepared us to be adults and to be successful out there in the real world. Without any formal classroom curriculum, we learned the fundamental management skills of planning, organizing, and executing a plan for a successful outcome. I believe the success each of us has attained in our life can, in some way, be attributed to having participated, during our formative college years, in the Longhorn Band.

Two New LHAB Promotional Pieces

We are excited to have, hot off the presses, two new promotional printed pieces for LHAB. The first is our new "Invite LHAB" card, which can be handed out anywhere and to anyone curious about how to invite LHAB to perform at a function. The card details what we play, who we typically play for, and includes a new web address to go to and fill out a form that will send us an inquiry. We have had a super busy spring, as you’ll read in the rest of the newsletter, and the donations we receive for playing at various birthday parties and corporate and social events truly make a difference and allow us to give that much more in scholarship funds to deserving LHB members! If you ever need to communicate the web address to an interested friend, colleague or family member, just send them to www.lhab.org/request.

DFW Area Report

The DFW Area Band played for two events this year.

The first was a joint performance with some TCU KKY/TBS members at the funeral for Jenkins Garrett. Jenkins was a former UT Regent, a Distinguished Graduate, a member of the Tejas Club, and one of the leading collectors of Texas historical items in the world. His collection was donated to UT Arlington, and it is open to the public. It is a worth a visit.

2010 Longhorn Band Golf Classic Summary

Thanks to everyone who helped make this year’s LHB Golf Classic the most successful ever! Through your donations, sponsorships, and entry fees, we were able to raise nearly $4000 that Kappa Kappa Psi will use to support the Longhorn Band in the upcoming year. A portion of the net proceeds has also been donated to support the band program at the Austin KIPP school.

A Longhorn Bandsman in WW2 Europe

Immediately after graduating Texas High School in June, 1942, at the age of 16- back then Texas public schools crammed a good education into only 11 years- I entered The University of Texas at Austin. When I went to Austin to attend the University, it was the farthest I had been from Texarkana ever. The war was already on, and most men of draft age were already gone. The Longhorn Band that summer numbered approximately 60 players. I played baritone.

2009-2010 Scholarship Thank You Letters

Sometimes it is nice to be reminded of why we do certain things. Even though being a LHAB member brings lots of fun (Family Friday Night Fun Bash, Band Day, area events, staying in touch with fellow LHAB members, etc.), our main goal is to recruit scholarship money to support current LHB members.

Last fall, all of the LHB members who received LHAB named or general scholarships wrote thank you letters. Here is one example.
