The Blast On-line - Winter 2010, Vol. 46, No. 1
From the President
Here's to a Great 2010,
Longhorn Alumni Band!
Hello, LHABers! I hope that you had
an enjoyable holiday season and are
having a terrific New Year! I know that
many of you made the trek to Pasadena,
California, in hopes of bringing home
another National Championship to
Austin. Unfortunately, the game didn't
go the way we had hoped. That makes
for two almost National Championships
this past fall (the other was women's
volleyball). On a happier note, thank
goodness for the basketball and baseball
seasons in the spring!
2009 was a memorable year for the
LHAB. As an organization, we have
participated in many community and
volunteer events around the state,
awarded over $30,000 in scholarships to
deserving Longhorn Band members, and
had yet another successful reunion with
over 500 marching and with the game
being later in the fall, many were happy
for the cooler temperatures! The combined
show was a tribute to veterans
as we played "Stars and Stripes
Forever" and delivered another exciting
show.
We hosted a special event on Friday
night of Band Day the LHAB Family
Fun Bash in the North End of DKR
Texas Memorial Stadium. An exciting
time was had by all! We had food and
drinks, face painting for the kiddos, and
many other fun activities. Our Friday
night rehearsal was held in the stands
of the stadium. We had a larger
attendance at the rehearsal than we
have had in years past. Thanks for
making this event such a success!
We also extend our thanks to the many
volunteers who continued the LHAB
tradition of excellence by making Band
Day 2009 a first class event. We
couldn't do what we do without the
numerous volunteers many of whom
identify themselves on Band Day who
help us get from Point A to Point B so
effectively. Drum Majors and Section
Leaders, thanks to those of you who
volunteer year after year. To those who
still carry the TBS and KKY spirits with
them as alumni, whether you were in
these organizations or not, deserve a
special thank you. Whether you carried
water jugs up the stairs or extra
percussion back to the Band Hall and
everything in between thank you. To
the 2008/09 LHAB Officers, your
dedication is something to behold and
thank you for all of your organization and
effort in making Band Day run smoothly,
from registration to instrument checkout
to vest returns. Our thanks also go
to UT Athletics for providing game-day
seats to us in the stands as well as making
both inside and outside facilities available
to us for Friday's registration and
rehearsal and Saturday's practice in the
dome. I would also like to extend my
personal thanks to Christi Cuellar, the
outgoing LHAB President, for her
leadership and new ideas this past year
and for her continued assistance as the
2009/10 LHAB Vice President of Band
Day Operations. We are excited to still
have her involvement on our team! Of
course, the Longhorn Band members,
service organizations, staff, student
leaders, and directors were as
hospitable as ever and for all of their help
and accessibility, we thank you. And,
most of all, to our LHAB membership
who renew their dues and fees annually
and participate in area events as well as
Band Day no matter when their alarm
clock goes off for rehearsal we greatly
appreciate you!
Looking forward to working with and
serving you in 2010!

Section Leaders
A big thank you to all of the LHAB
members who stepped up and
volunteered to be a section leader
and Drum Major for this year’s show.
We simply could not do this show
without your dedication to serving us
as you do. Our show is really
something to watch, and I wish there
was a way for the band to see the
practice from the ladder. To see the
way that you all get the band on the
field, organized, and the show taught
is pretty amazing. Of course, we have
good people to work with, too! It is
always something to see as the whole
thing comes together, and the band
steps off!
We owe all of you our thanks, and
we hope to see you on the field again
next year, charts in hand, and ready
to put on the show.

Austin Area Report
We had a great year in 2009. We played
for several birthday parties, the Admitted
Freshmen event, Maifest, CCLP
Fandango, Rise School, Jet Blue, and the
dedication of the new Diane Gorzycki
Middle School.
We finished the year with a very
successful run at the UT Club. We had
more people each and every week.
On December 14, a group performed
at the Tower Band event in which we
played Christmas carols at the four
corners of The University of Texas
Tower.
We had an event on January 22nd for a
retirement party for Suzan Nyfeler’s
father, and we have been asked to play
on February 6th for the UT Nursing
School Reunion.
We are looking forward to another busy
year. Thanks to all of you who have
helped out this past year, and we hope
you will continue to support us in these
very important events that raise money
for our scholarship fund. Please contact
George at utband1@aol.com if you are
interested in participating in LHAB
playing performances.

Looking Ahead to 2010
Next year will mark the 47th Annual
Reunion of the LHAB! We now know that Band Day for 2010 has been set for October 23rd against Iowa State. We will not likely know the game time until
a few weeks before the game but we do know we should have a good game against an improving conference foe in Iowa State.
Of course, it won't be the best Band Day
ever unless the gang's all here, so give
a shout-out to friends from your years
in LHB and join us!
