Get an awesome new LHAB mask when you make a scholarship donation!

Click to view a larger image in a new window.

The first 500 (and maybe more, depending on responses) people who renew their membership and make a donation to the LHAB Scholarships will receive a special gift:

Renew and donate $30 or more:   Receive one of the two masks pictured (we choose based upon availability)

Renew and donate $50 or more:   Receive one of EACH mask pictured

These high-quality reusable/washable masks are made with multiple-layer cotton and microfiber, with integrated metal nose piece, adjustable straps, a soft waffle-weave interior liner with filter pocket, and your favorite alumni band’s logo printedon it.

They really are nice, and if you wear them to a UT football game, you’ll have the best looking mask in the stands, or you can wear it at home, yell at the TV when the other team scores, and scare the dog (or your kids).  There are no mouthpiece holes, but they look awesome and really show your pride in your school and the Blast From the Past.

Most important of all, you’ll have made a gift to help the Longhorn Band at a time when they need our support more than ever before.  This year is truly a time for all of us to step up and show our commitment to support The Showband of the Southwest, and these masks are our way of thanking you for giving.   Please, give generously and help us support LHB!

Kay Bailey Hutchison Hall of Fame event with McComb’s School of Business

Kay Bailey Hutchison Hall of Fame event with McComb’s School of Business

On November 7, 2019, the Longhorn Alumni Band performed for Ambassador Kay Bailey Hutchison at the McCombs School of Business, The University of Texas at Austin Hall of Fame Dinner. The LHAB performed before a packed house in the Zlotnik Ballroom as Ambassador Hutchison became indoctrinated into the McCombs School of Business “Hall of Honor”.
Following the event, Kay Bailey Hutchinson visited with members of the LHAB and a photo-op. She was very appreciative of our performance in Normandy and vividly recalled our representation of the University at this worldwide celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Allied Invasion in Normandy in June 1944. Congratulations to Ambassador Hutchinson.
Thank you to all LHAB performers who attended and supported this event. #Hookem

40 for 40 Thank You

The Longhorn Band wishes to thank everyone who donated to the UT 40 for 40 campaign last week.  The outpouring support resulted in over $323,000 for student scholarships! Those funds are now invested so that future band members will benefit year after year.

And if that accomplishment were not enough, here are some other recent LHB accomplishments:

  • Supporting our Men’s Basketball team at the NIT as part of the Pep Band.
  • Supporting our Baseball team at the Texas vs. Texas A&M game.
  • Supporting our Women’s Volleyball team during a preseason match as part of the Pep Band.
  • Being recognized at UT Honors Day this past Saturday.
  • Performing in the Wind Symphony as part of a joint performance with musicians from the Austin Youth Orchestra
  • Raising funds for endowed scholarships with Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi.
  • Performing in the Symphony Band and in the Wind Ensemble with special guest composer Omar Thomas.
  • Raising funds for the Longhorn Band Student Association.

Our LHB students are amazing, and your support helps them to achieve great things.  Thanks for all you do!

Nominating Committee Invites New Officers

If you are interested in serving as an Officer of the Longhorn Alumni Band, please let us know.  We have opportunities to serve as both an officer or on one of our committees.  If you have questions about job function, time commitment, or just want to chat about the various ways you can get involved, please contact Sara Purdy by email.

Sara Purdy –

Membership Recruitment and Renewals Committee

LHAB is forming a new committee to assist with membership recruitment and renewals. The committee will work together to sustain and increase the number of dues-paying members by improving the benefits offered and assessing the value of membership.  Every year our operating expenses are increasing.  We would like to raise more money for these expenses without increasing yearly dues.

As it stands, most (if not all) of our membership dues are collected in conjunction with Band Day every year.  This means that anyone who doesn’t come to Band Day in any given year is not paying their yearly membership dues.  We would like to brainstorm ideas on how to encourage all of our members to pay their dues each year regardless of their Band Day attendance.  This would greatly increase our ability to provide more resources to both LHAB and LHB. Please email if you have any suggestions to help in this endeavor.

Instrument/Equipment Storage Space Needed

LHAB is in need of a new storage unit for our inventory of instruments and other equipment, including notable items such as four previous drumheads for Big Bertha. We have a looming deadline to find new storage, as the storage unit that we are currently using is no longer available.  If you have extra open storage space in the Austin area that you would be willing to donate or to allow LHAB to rent at a discounted rate for next year (or longer), please email  The unit would not need to be climate controlled, and your generosity would be greatly appreciated!

For over 3 decades, Moton Crockett has allowed LHAB to use his personal storage space, but as Austin continues to grow, this space has become required for business purposes.  We are so very grateful to Moton and his donation of space and time for us over these many years.  THANK YOU MOTON!!!

LHAB Leadership Records Update

Have you served as a leader of LHAB in the past?   We are attempting to compile a master list of the past leadership for LHAB and create a better digital record of this list.  If you served as President, BOD Chairperson, BOT Chairperson, BOD Member or BOT Member, please let us know below in this survey.  It should only take 2-4 minutes.  LHAB Past Leadership

2019 Alumni Band Symposium

LHAB will have two officers attending this year’s National Association of Alumni Band (NAoAB) alumni band symposium in Seattle on May 29-31 hosted by The University of Washington Husky Marching Band.  This conference will be held in conjunction with the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) spring meeting.  As a charter member of NAoAB, we hope to learn more from other alumni bands and will be sharing ideas and lessons learned from LHAB.

Hook ’em,

Normandy Update – Sept. 03, 2018

Hello LHAB Normandy Travelers:

We’re now inside 9 months to embarking upon our 75th D-Day Anniversary trip to Normandy and a lot has been happening since the last update.  Lot’s to cover here, and we’ll send regular updates as we gather more details and travel plans become more finalized.

Cherish Walser

  1. Stetson Hat Order:  If you have not yet ordered  ORDER HERE.
The deadline will be Oct. 1 at 12-noon if ordering thru LHAB at a cost of approximately $100, includes hat, cover and box.
If you have to order on your own, expect the cost to be higher.

  3. The cost of your uniform will be handled through Historic Programs, so stay tuned for billing updates. This will make it easy for all of us.
INSTRUMENT SHIPPING (Mike Haecker/ Scott Harmon – Chair)

  2. If you carry your instrument on the plane you must bring back with you. Due to the regulations, we cannot ship your instrument back.
  3. If you know of a company that would be interested in sponsoring all or a portion of the shipping costs please send Mike an email:

Expect her to contact you within the next month or so.

  1. We have the music and it will be posted online for download and available before Band Day.   Dr Hanna anticipates using some of the music for Normandy during this next Band Day performance, so get your horn out, practice the scales and have those lips in shape.
BAND DAY FLY OVER (Bill Phillips/Dr Scott Hanna)
  1. The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) will do a fly-over of several C-47’s including the plane that led the entire Normandy invasion during the November 17 UT pre-game.
  2. We are working with the CAF to have the opportunity to coordinate a fee-based tour of the planes on Sunday, November 18.  More details on this once confirmed.
  1. We are coordinating with Dr Thomas Hatfield, Director, Military History Institute and Dean Emeritus of Continuing Education for the Briscoe Center of American History at UT, who will be advising us on the historical significance of the D-Day Invasion. We may be circulating articles written by Dr Hatfield especially for us.
  2. We will be asking for group leaders to help with logistics and communication once we arrive in France. Group leader duties could include being a point person at a hotel, bus captain, equipment coordinator, LHAB ambassador, etc.   These responsibilities will be finalized as we finalize trip details and needs. These roles are similar to a section leader.

Here is the location on UT Campus you can go to obtain quickly.
